Maboussin Rings Benefit City Harvest
French jeweler Mauboussin recently opened their U.S. flagship store, a 6,000 square foot boutique on Madison Avenue in New York City and to demonstrate good will to the city they are announcing a charity gift this holiday season to benefit City Harvest, New York City's only food rescue program. Mauboussin will donate 10% of the retail value from the purchase of any ring from the "Mes Couleurs a Toi" collection to City Harvest and customers will also receive a 15% discount on their purchase. There are six versions of the ring featuring a central 6.5 carat stone in amethyst, citrine, blue topaz, smoky quartz, lemon quartz and rose de France amethyst set in gold with accent diamonds

Deborah Kerr's RIng Up For Auction
A bit of Hollywood goes on the block this week when jewelry that once belonged to Hollywood actress Deborah Kerr will go on sale in London. Kerr, who starred in movies such as "From Here To Eternity" and "The King and I" died in October of last year. One of the priciest items for sale at the auction at Bonham's London on December 4 is this triple-stone diamond engagement ring from her first husband, Squadron Leader Anthony Charles Bartley. It features three yellow-tinted, brilliant-cut diamonds which weigh 2.32, 2.98 and 2.17 carats respectively each within a four-claw setting on a tapered hoop of woven design. The ring is estimated at £20,000-25,000.

Piano company Steinway & Sons is now in the watch business. Their unique
Steinway & Sons Watches are designed to honor the company's musical heritage as well watchmaking and should be a hit with music lovers. Pianist and watchmaker Fabrizio Cavalca is behind the watches which are inspired by the look of a grand piano. The dial has 12 hand-fitted strings on a gold soundboard and ebonized hands with a satin finish. The second hand is in the form of a tuning fork. The mens' watch uses a Swiss automatic movement, a customized ETA 2000 with an ebonized rotor and bridge. The dial and the crown of the watch bear the Steinway logo and the strap is alligator.

Blancpain is absolutely stuffed with diamonds. The Tourbillon Diamants has 480 diamonds for a total of 58 carats. The dial sparkles with a brick-like arrangement of baguette diamonds. The watch uses the Blancpain Calibre 25A movement, a mechanical self-winding movement made of 239 parts with a seven-day power reserve. The 40mm white gold case is water resistant. The white gold bracelet is set with 42 carats of diamonds.

Tastes change with age. I’d always thought of gold watches as gaudy. In bad taste. Self-indulgent. Hedonistic. Either that, or I considered them watches for old people. For retirees. But recently it struck me how fun it would be to wear a gold Grand Seiko as an everyday watch. To wear to the office. To wear pumping gas. Solid gold Grand Seikos are sexy.
Collecting watches is an enjoyable hobby, but usually not a good investment. Yet, with the steadily weakening US dollar caused by fears of a looming economic recession in America, watches with 18 karat gold cases, such as Grand Seikos, become more valuable each year. The chart above shows how gold has appreciated over the past seven years. Last week, gold traded at over $700 US per ounce. Gold is a good hedge against inflation.

Barrick, the world’s largest gold producer, climbed as much as 3.8 percent, the biggest intraday gain since June 25. Newmont, based in Greenwood Village, Colorado, advanced as much as 6 percent, the biggest intraday rise since May 11
Gold futures for December delivery rose to a record $ 1,276.50 an ounce on the Comex in New York as investors seeking a hedge against possible declines in currencies and equities. The metal is heading for its 10th annual duty.
Bullion reached his previous record in June, trading at $ 1,266.50 and attracting investors like George Soros and John Paulson.

SYDNEY – Australia’s new 40 percent tax on mining profits is not as far-reaching as it first seems. The tax will sting, no doubt, but it will not apply to all the profits of miners working in Australia. Any profits derived from mines outside Australia will be left untouched. So companies like Anglo-Australian mining giants BHP Billiton (BHP.AX: Quote, Profile, Research) (BLT.L: Quote, Profile, Research) and Rio Tinto (RIO.AX: Quote, Profile, Research) (RIO.L: Quote, Profile, Research) have less to lose than the naked headlines would suggest: their non-Australian mining operations are completely outside the tax.
